Society of St. Andrews
Society of St. Andrews [supported by 2 cents per meal]
Society of St. Andrews is a non-profit, ecumenical hunger relief organization.
A Christian ministry dedicated to gleaning America’s fields and feeding America’s hungry, we provide healthy, nutritious produce to society’s most vulnerable through innovative, cost effective programs.
We accomplish our mission through three programs: the Potato Project, the Gleaning Network, and Harvest of Hope.
Our innovative and cost effective methods enable us to provide food to the hungry for just pennies per serving! That means that for under $50, the Society of St. Andrew can provide a person the USDA recommended requirement of vegetables and fruits for an entire year.
Gleaning is a hands-on task for volunteers to go into farm fields after harvest to salvage the vegetables that otherwise are left to rot. In Central Florida the Society of Saint Andrews organizes many gleaning events to salvage corn, potatoes, onions, cabbage. squash, cucumbers and citrus. Everyone is invited to meet at the designated place (or) farm — usually on a holiday or Saturday, and follow instructions to harvest left over crop. In conjunction with the Second Harvest Food Bank, a truck is provided, with help available to load the produce on the truck. Last year over 1,000,000 pounds of crops were salvaged for the Food Bank to distribute. Nationwide, since 1979, over 540 million pounds have been recovered that would otherwise go to waste.
