HAITI-Reforestation (CODEP)

One effort that Two Cents Per Meal supports is a major sustainable reforestation project in Haiti called CODEP (Comprehensive Development Project), which was founded nearly twenty years ago to effect the reforestation project. Today nearly 30,000 acres of land have been reforested by employed Haitians who plant, tend, manage and farm their own plot of forest. As of March, 2010, CODEP has 33 nurseries producing over 450,000 seedlings for spring plantings and another 450,000 for late summer/early fall, with more than 50 concrete fish ponds in the project area for protein production. The mountain community of approximately 2,000 Haitians has been served with improved water supplies, housing, and improved schools. The areas CODEP serves have experienced marked reduction in flooding due to up-river reforestation efforts. The planting and reforesting of Eucalyptus trees, fruit trees, coffee and gardens are providing food, income, and a sustainable future for the reforestation farmers and their families. more…
